When you need a 240 cm runner

Most standard runners are about 200 cm long. In a typical UK hallway of 3 to 4 metres, a 240 cm runner covers more of the walkway while still leaving floor showing at each end, so it looks deliberate rather than squeezed in. Every runner in this collection comes in a 240 cm length, in one of three widths:

SizeWhat you will find hereBest for
67 x 240 cmMachine-woven polyester runners in Persian-inspired and vintage designs with a low pileNarrow halls, doors that open over the runner
68 x 240 cmPower-loomed jute flatweaves in bouclé, loop and herringbone texturesNatural, textured looks; layering on wood floors
80 x 240 cmPolypropylene shaggy runnersWider landings and beside a bed

Getting the length right

Leave roughly 15 to 30 cm of floor at each end of the hall and keep the runner clear of door swings. If two runners are needed for a very long hall, match the design and leave an even gap between them. Our hallway runner calculator works out the size for you, and the runner size guide explains the rules.

Questions about long hallway runners

How long should a hallway runner be?

Long enough to leave about 15 to 30 cm of floor at each end and clear any door swing. In many 3 to 4 metre halls that means a 240 cm runner.

How wide should a runner be?

Leave around 10 to 15 cm of floor either side. 67 to 68 cm suits most narrow UK halls; 80 cm suits wider halls and landings.

Do long runners need an underlay?

Yes on hard floors. A thin non-slip mesh underlay the full length stops slipping and creeping.
