Wool rugs

Wool is one of the most comfortable and hard-wearing fibres you can put on a floor. It feels warm underfoot, holds its shape well and has a natural depth of colour that synthetic fibres find hard to match. Our wool rugs include pure wool and wool-blend designs, so you can choose between a soft matt finish and a subtle sheen.

For colour and pattern, the hand-tufted Reef collection brings bold geometric, mid-century and floral designs in sage, forest green, ochre, teal and terracotta. The Tigra and Caruso wool rugs offer warm, earthy tones in sand, mocha and spice orange. If you prefer a gentle shimmer, the Henley wool and viscose rugs come in silver, sand, sage, putty and petrol grey.

Looking for something calmer? Our plain and textured wool rugs focus on neutral, single-colour designs. New to wool? Read our rug care advice for help with shedding and cleaning, and check the rug size guide before you order.

Why choose a wool rug?

Wool is the classic rug fibre for good reasons. Each fibre is naturally crimped, so the pile springs back after it is walked on, and the natural lanolin in the fibre helps it shrug off dry dirt. Wool is also naturally slow to ignite and holds dye deeply, which gives wool rugs their rich, slightly matt colour. Most of our wool rugs are hand tufted, a method where yarn is punched through a backing cloth by hand-held tool, then sheared to an even pile; some are hand woven on a loom for a flatter, more structured surface.

What to expect from a new wool rug

  • Shedding: loose fibres work their way out for the first few weeks. It is normal and settles with regular vacuuming (suction only, no beater bar). Read why rugs shed.
  • Cleaning: blot spills straight away and work from the outside in. Our wool rug cleaning guide takes you through it step by step.
  • Wool and viscose blends: designs that mix wool with viscose add a soft sheen. See wool and viscose rugs.

Questions about wool rugs

Do wool rugs shed?

Yes, at first. New wool rugs release loose fibres left from production for the first few weeks. Vacuum regularly with suction only and it settles down.

Are wool rugs good for living rooms?

Yes. Wool is resilient, so it recovers well from footfall and furniture, which makes it a good choice for busy living rooms.

What is the difference between hand tufted and hand woven?

Hand tufted rugs have yarn punched through a backing and sheared to a pile, with a secondary backing glued on. Hand woven rugs are made on a loom, with the yarn woven through the warp threads, so they are often flatter and reversible in feel.

What is the difference between wool and wool and viscose rugs?

Pure wool has a soft, matt look. Adding viscose gives the rug a light sheen and highlights the pattern, but viscose is more delicate when wet.
