The 60 cm rule

A dining rug should extend at least 60 cm beyond the edge of the table on every side, so that chair legs stay on the rug when someone sits down and pushes back. A rug that is too small catches the back legs every meal. Measure your table, add 120 cm to its length and width, and choose the nearest size up.

Every rug here comes in at least one size 200 cm wide or larger, has a low or medium pile (12 mm or less where the maker lists it), and excludes shaggy designs that chairs would snag. Patterned designs hide crumbs best. Full advice: rugs under a dining table.

Questions about dining room rugs

Should a rug go under a dining table?

It is optional, but a rug softens noise, protects the floor from chairs and defines the dining zone in an open-plan room.

What size rug for a 6 seater dining table?

Usually 200 x 290 cm. Check that the rug extends at least 60 cm beyond the table on every side.

What type of rug is best under a dining table?

A low pile or flatweave in a patterned or mid-tone design, which lets chairs slide and hides crumbs.
