Why choose a flatweave?

A flatweave rug has no raised pile: the yarn is woven straight through the warp, like a textile, so the surface is flat and tight. That makes flatweaves thin and light, quick to vacuum, easy to roll up and move, and ideal where a door must open over the rug. Kilims are the best-known traditional flatweaves; modern ones include jute loop, herringbone and power-loomed synthetic weaves.

Best places for a flatweave

Flatweaves are light, so use a non-slip underlay on hard floors (rug pads explained).

Questions about flatweave rugs

Are flatweave rugs comfortable?

They are firmer and thinner than pile rugs. If comfort underfoot matters, add a felt and rubber underlay, or choose a low pile rug instead.

Do flatweave rugs slip?

They are light, so yes on hard floors without an underlay. A thin non-slip pad solves it.

Can a door open over a flatweave rug?

Usually, because flatweaves are only a few millimetres thick. Check the gap under your door before you buy.
