How to stop a rug slipping
A rug that slides or bunches is irritating and can be a trip hazard. Here is how to make any rug stay put, on any floor.
On wood, laminate, vinyl and tiles
- Non-slip underlay: the most effective fix. Felt and rubber for comfort and grip; thin rubber mesh for runners and small rugs. Cut 2 to 5 cm smaller than the rug.
- Rug tape or corner grippers: washable, re-usable grippers hold corners and edges flat. Check they are safe for your floor finish.
- Anchor with furniture: putting the front legs of the sofa or a bed on the rug stops it moving.
On fitted carpet
Rugs on carpet do not slip so much as "creep" in the direction of the carpet pile and bunch up. Use a rug-to-carpet underlay, which has a textured or tacky surface that grips the carpet. Anchoring furniture helps too. See how to put a rug on carpet.
Runners and hallways
Runners slip most because they are light and walked along in one direction. Use a mesh underlay the full length, slightly narrower than the runner, plus grippers at each end.
Keep it working
- Clean the floor before laying the underlay; dust stops grip.
- Wash mesh underlays with warm soapy water when they lose grip, and let them dry.
- Replace pads that have hardened or crumbled.
Protecting your floor
Some rubber and PVC products can react with certain floor finishes over time. On expensive wood, natural felt and natural rubber underlays are the safest choice; check your floor maker's guidance. More in rug pads explained.
