Modern rugs: pattern without the fuss
Modern rugs swap borders and medallions for all-over pattern: brush-stroke abstracts, marbled washes, arches, kites, grids and carved lines. Because the pattern runs edge to edge, there is no "centre" to line up with the furniture, which makes a modern design easier to place in a room with an off-centre sofa or a corner seating layout.

What is the difference between a modern and a contemporary rug?
In practice the terms are used interchangeably for rugs with abstract or geometric pattern rather than traditional borders and medallions.
Do patterned rugs make a room look smaller?
Not usually. A rug that is big enough for the furniture makes a room feel more ordered. Busy, high-contrast patterns are most effective in larger rooms; tonal patterns suit small ones.
Are modern rugs easy to clean?
Most of our modern designs are machine woven from polypropylene or polyester, which do not absorb water-based spills easily. Blot spills quickly and follow the care notes on the product page.
