Rugs made for the garden, the patio and the back door

Outdoor rugs are woven from synthetic fibres such as polypropylene and polyester that do not soak up water the way wool or jute do. A low, flat weave lets them dry quickly and makes it easy to sweep off leaves and soil. Several designs are labelled for indoor and outdoor use, so they also make practical rugs for kitchens, conservatories and utility rooms.

Outdoor rug care

  • Sweep or vacuum off dry dirt; hose down and let the rug dry fully in the air, flat or over a rail.
  • Do not leave it on wet grass or under standing water for long periods; lift and dry it after heavy rain.
  • Bring it inside over winter to keep the colours fresh.

See our outdoor rug guide.

Questions about outdoor rugs

Can outdoor rugs stay out in the rain?

They are made to cope with getting wet, but they last longer if you let them dry after heavy rain and store them inside over winter.

Can I use an outdoor rug indoors?

Yes. Indoor-outdoor rugs are practical in kitchens, conservatories and by the back door, where spills and muddy feet are common.

How do I clean an outdoor rug?

Shake or sweep off dirt, then rinse with a hose and mild soap if needed. Dry it completely before rolling it up.
