What makes a good kitchen rug?
Kitchens are tough on rugs: crumbs, splashes, grease, damp feet and constant traffic between the sink, hob and fridge. We have chosen rugs and runners for this collection because the maker lists at least one practical feature, washable, flatweave, indoor-outdoor or a pile of 10 mm or less, in synthetic yarns that do not absorb water-based spills easily. We have left out wool, viscose, jute and shaggy designs.
- Galley kitchens: a runner along the units, stopping short of the end of the run.
- In front of the sink: a small rug or short runner catches drips.
- Under a kitchen table: follow the 60 cm rule in our dining rug guide.
Use a thin non-slip underlay so the rug stays put and doors still clear it. More in the kitchen rugs guide.
Questions about kitchen rugs
Are rugs in the kitchen a good idea?
Yes, if you choose a washable, low pile or flatweave synthetic rug and use a non-slip underlay. They add comfort where you stand most.
What is the best material for a kitchen rug?
Polypropylene, polyester or recycled polyester. They do not absorb water-based spills quickly and are easy to clean.
How do I stop a kitchen rug slipping?
Use a thin rubber or PVC mesh underlay cut slightly smaller than the rug.
