Jute rugs and natural fibre rugs

Jute rugs are woven from a natural plant fibre, which gives them a warm, earthy texture and a relaxed look that suits living rooms, bedrooms and dining spaces. They are a simple way to add depth to a room, and they layer well under a smaller patterned rug.

Our collection covers a range of weaves. The Bordo Herringbone jute rugs come in slate, linen, khaki and charcoal with cream, and the Bordo Boucle designs add colour in rust orange, sage green, navy and cream linen. For extra softness, the Korra Loop and Korra Double Loop rugs combine jute with wool. The Loop and Nature jute rugs keep it simple in natural tones, and the Souk jute rug comes in natural or bleach and black.

Jute is best kept dry, so for kitchens and entrances you might prefer our washable rugs. If you need help with size, see our rug size guide, and browse runners for hallways.

Natural texture, made from plants

Jute is spun from the stalk of the jute plant. Woven into a rug it gives a dry, nubbly texture and a warm honey-to-straw colour that sits comfortably with oak floors, linen and rattan. Our natural rugs include loop, double loop, herringbone and bouclé weaves, several finished with a cotton border that keeps the edges neat.

Where jute works best

  • Living rooms, bedrooms, studies and dining rooms, where it stays dry.
  • Underneath a softer rug, as a base layer. See how to layer rugs.
  • Not in bathrooms, damp porches or by the back door: plant fibres absorb water and can mark. For wet areas choose a washable or outdoor rug.

Jute is firm rather than plush underfoot. If you want softness, look at wool rugs instead. The jute rugs guide covers care and cleaning.

Questions about jute & natural rugs

Are jute rugs soft?

Jute is firm and textured rather than soft. Tight loop and bouclé weaves feel smoother than chunky ones, but it will never feel like a wool pile.

Can you clean a jute rug with water?

Keep water to a minimum. Blot spills immediately with a dry cloth, use as little moisture as possible and dry the area quickly. Soaking or steam cleaning can cause brown marks and shrinkage.

Do jute rugs shed?

A little at first. Natural fibres release some dust and fibre for the first few weeks, which regular vacuuming removes.
