The easiest rug to live with
A plain rug is the interior designer's safe bet: it anchors furniture, softens the floor and works with any cushions, art or wallpaper you add later. The best plain rugs are rarely flat colour. Look for texture: a chunky loop, a ribbed or herringbone weave, a high-low carved pile, a melange of two tones or a soft sheen from viscose. Texture gives a plain rug depth and helps hide footprints.
Picking a colour
- Lighter than the floor makes a room feel bigger; darker than the floor makes it feel cosy.
- Warm neutrals (cream, sand, oatmeal) suit oak and warm whites; cool neutrals (grey, silver, charcoal) suit grey floors and white walls.

Questions about plain & textured rugs
Do plain rugs show dirt more?
Very pale and very dark solid colours show marks more than mid-tones. A textured or melange plain rug hides everyday dirt much better.
Will a plain rug look boring?
Not if you choose texture. Loops, ribs, carved lines and mixed yarns make a plain rug interesting up close.
What colour plain rug goes with a grey sofa?
Cream, oatmeal and warm beige soften grey; a charcoal rug gives a smart tonal look. Sage and dusty blue also sit well with grey.
