Why polypropylene is so popular
Polypropylene (sometimes called olefin) is a synthetic fibre that does not absorb water, so water-based spills such as squash, tea or muddy paw prints sit on the surface long enough to be blotted away. It is lightweight, holds its colour well and costs far less than wool, which makes it the fibre of choice for many machine-woven rugs. Many of ours blend polypropylene with polyester for a softer handle, and the range runs from flat, crisp abstracts to deep shaggy piles.
Things to know
- Polypropylene is not as springy as wool, so use furniture cups under heavy legs and rotate the rug every few months.
- Oily stains bond to it more readily than water-based ones; treat grease quickly with a little washing-up liquid in warm water.
- Some designs are labelled for indoor and outdoor use; see outdoor rugs.

Questions about polypropylene rugs
Are polypropylene rugs safe?
Polypropylene is widely used in rugs and carpets. Some of our designs also carry OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certification, which means they have been tested for harmful substances. See OEKO-TEX certified rugs.
Are polypropylene rugs good for pets?
They are a practical choice because water-based accidents do not soak in quickly and a low or medium pile is easy to vacuum. Avoid loop piles if your pet has sharp claws.
Do polypropylene rugs smell?
Some synthetic rugs have a faint smell when first unrolled. Leaving the rug flat in a ventilated room for a day or two usually clears it.
