Rug care
A little regular care keeps a good rug looking good for years.
Every week
- Vacuum without the beater bar, or with it raised, and work in the direction of the pile.
- Shake small rugs and runners outside.
Every few months
- Turn the rug around so sunlight and footfall wear it evenly.
- Put an anti-slip underlay beneath it. This stops it moving, protects the floor and makes the rug last longer.
Spills
Act quickly. Blot from the outside edge towards the centre with a clean white cloth. Never rub. Use cold water with a little mild wool-safe detergent, then blot it dry. For anything stubborn, call a professional rug cleaner.
By material
Wool
New wool rugs shed loose fibres for the first few weeks. This is normal and settles down with regular vacuuming. Trim any loose loops with scissors rather than pulling them.
Jute and natural fibres
Keep them dry. Water can leave marks on jute, so blot spills immediately and dry the area with a hairdryer on a cool setting.
Shaggy
Shake the rug out often and use a vacuum with suction only. Brushing the pile by hand brings back its bounce.
Outdoor and recycled
Hose them down and leave them to dry flat. Bring them indoors or store them rolled over winter.
Every product page also has care instructions for that particular rug.
