How to choose a hallway runner
A runner should leave a strip of floor showing on both sides, usually 10 to 15 cm, so measure the width of the hall and subtract 20 to 30 cm. For length, leave 15 to 30 cm clear at each end, and stop the runner short of where a door swings. Most of our runners are 66 to 80 cm wide and 200 to 240 cm long; two runners laid end to end, with a small gap, work in a long corridor.
Runners beyond the hallway
- Kitchens: in front of the sink or along a galley. Choose low pile or washable. See kitchen rugs.
- Bedrooms: one each side of the bed instead of one large rug.
- Landings: a short runner softens footsteps outside bedrooms.
Use a non-slip underlay on hard floors; see rug pads explained. Full measurements are in our runner size guide.
Questions about runners
What width runner do I need for my hallway?
Measure the hall and take off 20 to 30 cm so you see 10 to 15 cm of floor each side. A 90 cm hall usually suits a runner about 66 to 70 cm wide.
How do I stop a runner slipping?
Use a thin non-slip rug underlay cut slightly smaller than the runner. On carpet, use an underlay made for rug-on-carpet use.
Can I use a runner in the kitchen?
Yes. Choose a low pile, flatweave or washable runner so crumbs vacuum out easily and the door can open over it.
