When you need an extra large rug
Once a room is bigger than about 4 x 5 m, or you have an L-shaped sofa plus armchairs, a 200 cm-wide rug can look like an island. An extra large rug of 240 x 320 cm or 240 x 340 cm (about 7ft 10in x 11ft 2in) lets every piece of furniture sit on it and makes an open-plan space feel zoned and calm. Every design here is available in at least one size 240 cm wide or more.
- Leave at least 30 cm of floor showing around the edge, more in very large rooms.
- Plan where it will be unrolled: a rug this size is heavy and needs space and two people to position.
- Use an underlay cut about 5 cm smaller than the rug on each side.
Questions about extra large rugs
What size is an extra large rug?
Usually 240 x 340 cm (about 8 x 11 ft) or larger. 240 x 320 cm is a common alternative.
Will an extra large rug fit through my door?
Rugs are delivered rolled, so they fit through standard doors and up stairs.
Is a bigger rug always better?
In a living room, generally yes, up to the point where you still see a border of floor around it.
