Structure underfoot
Geometric rugs use repeated shapes such as hexagons, triangles, diamonds, chevrons and grids. Because the pattern is regular, a geometric rug brings order to a room and works well with the straight lines of modern furniture. Smaller-scale geometrics read almost as texture from a distance; bold, large-scale ones become the focal point.
Tips for choosing
- Line the pattern up with the longest wall or the sofa, so the geometry looks intentional.
- In a small room, choose a small repeat or a tonal design; save large, high-contrast shapes for big rooms.
- Herringbone and loop weaves in jute give geometry in a natural, textured way.

Questions about geometric rugs
Do geometric rugs go with patterned sofas?
Keep one of the two calm. With a patterned sofa, choose a tonal or small-scale geometric rug; with a plain sofa, a bold geometric works well.
Are geometric rugs modern or traditional?
Both. Many traditional rug styles, such as kilims and Berber rugs, are geometric. Clean, graphic geometrics read as modern.
Which way should a geometric rug face?
Align the dominant lines with the longest wall or the front of the sofa.
