What "handmade" means for a rug

Most handmade rugs today are made in one of two ways:

  • Hand tufted: a craftsperson uses a hand-held tufting tool to punch yarn through a stretched backing cloth, following a drawn pattern. The loops are sheared to a level pile (or left uncut for texture), then a secondary backing is glued on. It gives a dense, plush pile and crisp, carved detail.
  • Hand woven: yarn is woven through warp threads on a hand loom, producing flatter, often reversible rugs with a slightly irregular, crafted surface.

Because they are made by hand, small variations in colour and size are normal and are part of the appeal. Most of our handmade designs are wool or wool blends; some use recycled polyester for a softer, lower-cost pile. Find out more in hand tufted vs hand woven vs machine made.

Questions about handmade rugs

Are hand tufted rugs good quality?

A well-made hand tufted wool rug is dense, soft and long-lasting. It sheds more at first than a machine-woven rug because the pile is cut from loops.

Is a handmade rug the same as hand knotted?

No. Hand knotting, where each knot is tied individually, is the slowest and most expensive method. Our handmade rugs are hand tufted or hand woven.

Why does my handmade rug measure slightly differently?

Handmade rugs can vary by a few centimetres from the stated size. That is normal for hand production.
