Rugs under a dining table: size, shape and material
A rug under the dining table softens noise, protects the floor and defines the dining zone. It only works if it is big enough. Here is how to get it right.
The 60 cm rule
When someone sits down and pushes back, the chair moves roughly 50 to 70 cm from the table edge. So the rug must extend at least 60 cm beyond the table on every side, otherwise the back chair legs catch on the edge every meal.
Formula: rug length = table length + 120 cm; rug width = table width + 120 cm.
Sizes by table
| Table | Example table size | Minimum rug | Standard rug to choose |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 to 4 seat round | 90 cm diameter | 210 cm | 200 x 290 cm (or a 200 cm round) |
| 4 seat square | 90 x 90 cm | 210 x 210 cm | 200 x 290 cm |
| 4 seat rectangular | 120 x 80 cm | 240 x 200 cm | 200 x 290 cm |
| 6 seat rectangular | 160 x 90 cm | 280 x 210 cm | 200 x 300 cm (snug) or 240 x 340 cm |
| 8 seat rectangular | 200 x 100 cm | 320 x 220 cm | 240 x 340 cm |
In a tight dining space, 160 x 230 cm can work under a small four-seat table if the chairs mostly stay tucked in, but the chairs will catch when pulled out fully.
Pile and material
- Low pile or flatweave so chairs slide rather than snag. Avoid shaggy and deep piles. See low pile rugs and flatweave rugs.
- Patterned or mid-tone designs hide crumbs. Traditional and Persian-style patterns are classic for a reason. See traditional rugs.
- Easy-clean fibres: polypropylene and polyester shrug off water-based spills; wool is forgiving if you blot quickly. Avoid viscose and jute under a table with young children.
Shape
Match the rug to the table: rectangular rugs for rectangular and oval tables; round or square rugs for round and square tables. A rectangular rug under a round table works in a long room.
Practical tips
- Use a thin felt and rubber pad so the rug does not shift when chairs move.
- Felt pads on chair feet reduce wear.
- Vacuum after meals with the brush bar off.
Frequently asked questions
What size rug for a 6 seater dining table?
For a typical 160 x 90 cm table, 200 x 300 cm is the smallest standard size that nearly meets the 60 cm rule; 240 x 340 cm gives full clearance.
Should a dining rug be bigger than the table?
Yes, by at least 60 cm on every side so chairs stay on it.
What is the best rug for under a dining table?
A low pile or flatweave in an easy-clean synthetic or wool, in a patterned or mid-tone design.
Should a rug go under a kitchen table?
It can, using the same 60 cm rule, but choose a washable or very easy-clean rug.
