When a low pile is the right choice

Pile height is the length of the fibres standing up from the backing. A low pile, roughly 10 mm or less, gives a crisp, tailored surface that shows pattern clearly, vacuums easily and lets chairs and doors pass over without catching. In this collection we include every rug whose specifications list a pile height of 10 mm or less, together with flatweaves, which have no pile at all.

Questions about low pile rugs

What counts as low pile?

There is no fixed standard, but rugs with a pile of about 10 mm or less are usually called low pile. Medium pile is roughly 10 to 20 mm and shaggy or high pile is above that.

Are low pile rugs comfortable?

They are firmer than shaggy rugs. Adding a cushioned underlay makes a low pile rug feel more substantial underfoot.

Do low pile rugs work with underfloor heating?

They are a good choice, because a thinner rug insulates less. Check the combined tog of rug and underlay with your heating installer.
