Rug pile heights explained
Pile height is the length of the fibres standing up from the rug backing. It decides how soft a rug feels, how easy it is to clean and where it can go.

Pile height vs total height
Pile height is the fibre only. Total height includes the backing, and is what matters for door clearance. Add the thickness of any underlay too.
Will it clear my door?
Measure the gap between the bottom of the open door and the floor at its lowest point. You need the total rug height plus underlay to be less than that gap, with a few millimetres to spare.
Pile density matters too
A dense, short pile often feels more luxurious and wears better than a long, sparse one. Press your fingers into a pile: if you can easily feel the backing, it is less dense.
