Rug pads and underlays explained

A good underlay is the cheapest way to make any rug safer, more comfortable and longer-lasting. Here is what each type does and which one your floor needs.

What a rug pad does

  • Stops slipping and rucking, which is a trip hazard on wood, laminate and tiles.
  • Adds cushioning, making a thin or flatweave rug feel more substantial.
  • Protects the floor from grit and from the rug's backing.
  • Extends the rug's life by reducing friction between the rug and the floor.
  • Reduces noise, useful in flats and upstairs rooms.

Which pad for which floor?

  • Engineered or solid wood: felt and natural rubber. Avoid PVC that may react with some lacquered or oiled finishes; check with your floor maker.
  • Laminate and LVT: felt and rubber or a quality mesh.
  • Tiles and stone: mesh or felt and rubber.
  • Carpet: a rug-to-carpet underlay. Read how to put a rug on carpet.
  • Underfloor heating: the thinnest pad possible. See rugs and underfloor heating.

What size should the pad be?

Cut the pad 2 to 5 cm smaller than the rug on every side, so it does not show and the rug edges lie flat onto the floor. For a 160 x 230 cm rug, a pad of about 150 x 220 cm is right. Use sharp scissors and cut on a flat surface.

Tips

  • Lay the pad first, then unroll the rug over it from one end.
  • Vacuum the floor before laying the pad; grit trapped under it can scratch.
  • Lift and air the pad and floor when you rotate the rug.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a rug pad?

On hard floors, yes for safety and comfort. Large, heavy rugs held by furniture may not slip, but a pad still protects the floor and adds cushion.

Do rug pads damage wood floors?

Good felt and natural rubber pads are designed for wood. Avoid cheap PVC pads on some finishes, and check your floor maker’s advice.

Should a rug pad be the same size as the rug?

No, about 2 to 5 cm smaller on every side.

Can I use a rug pad on carpet?

Yes, use one made for rug-to-carpet use. It grips the carpet and stops the rug creeping.
