Deep pile for comfort and warmth

A thick rug adds a layer of insulation and sound absorption to a room, which is why deep piles are so popular in bedrooms, flats with wooden floors and north-facing living rooms. This collection includes every rug whose specifications list a pile height of 20 mm or more, most of them shaggy designs in soft polypropylene, polyester or recycled yarns.

Tips for thick rugs

  • Keep them away from dining chairs and door swings; a deep pile is harder to slide across.
  • Vacuum on the highest setting with suction only, and fluff flattened areas with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
  • Over underfloor heating, a deep pile reduces heat output. Read rugs and underfloor heating.

Questions about thick & deep pile rugs

What is the thickest rug type?

Shaggy rugs have the deepest piles. On our site the deepest specified piles are around 45 to 50 mm.

Are thick rugs harder to clean?

A deep pile holds more dust, so vacuum regularly with suction only. Some deep pile rugs we sell are washable; check the care notes.

Do thick rugs keep a room warmer?

A rug adds insulation over a hard floor and feels warmer underfoot. A deeper pile insulates more than a thin one.
