Texture you can see and feel
A high-low rug uses two or more pile heights in one design, so the pattern appears as raised and recessed areas rather than (or as well as) colour. Carving does the same thing after tufting: the pile is clipped away along lines to create grooves and edges. Cut-and-loop rugs mix sheared and looped yarns for a subtle, tonal pattern. The result reads beautifully in neutral rooms where a strong print would be too much.
Living with a textured rug
- Low-angle light, from a window or a floor lamp, shows the relief best.
- Vacuum in the direction of the pile and use suction only, so loops are not pulled.
- Furniture leaves dents in a deep area; rotate the rug or use furniture cups.
Questions about high-low & carved rugs
What is a high-low pile rug?
A rug with two or more different pile heights, so the pattern is formed by raised and lower areas.
Are carved rugs hard to clean?
Not if you vacuum regularly with suction only. Blot spills quickly so they do not settle into the grooves.
Do textured rugs suit small rooms?
Yes. A tonal, textured rug adds interest without the visual busyness of a strong print, which can suit a small room well.
