Why do rugs shed, and how long does it last?
Found fluff all over the floor after unrolling a new rug? It is almost always normal. Here is why rugs shed and how to settle it down.
Why rugs shed
Shedding is the loss of short, loose fibres left in the rug from manufacturing. In a cut-pile rug, the yarn is sheared to length, and short fragments stay trapped in the pile until foot traffic and vacuuming release them. It is not the rug falling apart: the fibres that make up the pile are anchored into the backing, and only loose bits come out.
Which rugs shed most?
| Rug type | Shedding | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hand-tufted wool | Most | Cut loops of short-staple wool |
| Wool and viscose | High | Viscose fibres work loose |
| Polyester shaggy | Medium at first | Long, fine cut yarns |
| Jute | Low to medium | Plant fibre dust |
| Machine-woven polypropylene | Low | Continuous filament yarns |
| Flatweave | Lowest | No cut pile |
How long does shedding last?
For most rugs, noticeable shedding settles within a few weeks to a few months, depending on how often the rug is walked on and vacuumed. A rug in a quiet bedroom may take longer than one in a busy living room.
What to do
- Vacuum regularly, two or three times a week at first, with suction only or the brush roll off.
- Empty the vacuum often; shedding fibre fills bags and bins quickly.
- Shake small rugs outside.
- Trim (never pull) any long strand that stands above the pile.
When shedding might be a problem
Contact us if you see bald patches, the backing showing through, tufts pulling out with their base, or shedding that increases after several months. If something is wrong with a rug, see our returns page for your rights.
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for a new rug to shed?
Yes. Most new cut-pile rugs, especially wool, shed loose fibres for the first weeks.
Will my rug stop shedding?
Yes, once the loose fibres are out. Regular vacuuming speeds it up.
Should I use a beater bar on a shedding rug?
No. A beater bar can pull fibres and make shedding worse. Use suction only.
Which rugs do not shed?
Flatweaves and machine-woven polypropylene rugs shed least.
