How to put a rug on carpet

Layering a rug over fitted carpet adds colour and pattern, zones a room and protects the carpet. Done right, it looks deliberate and stays flat.

The rules for rugs on carpet

  1. Contrast the texture. A flatweave or low-pile rug on a soft carpet, or a patterned rug on a plain carpet, reads as intentional.
  2. Go for a lower or similar pile. A thin or medium pile rug lies flatter than a deep shaggy on a deep carpet.
  3. Contrast the colour. A beige rug on beige carpet disappears; choose darker, lighter or patterned.
  4. Use a rug-to-carpet underlay. It stops creeping and rippling.
  5. Anchor it. Front legs of the sofa or the lower part of the bed on the rug.

Why rugs move on carpet

Every footstep pushes a rug slightly in the direction of the carpet pile. Over weeks it creeps and ripples. A rug-to-carpet underlay with a tacky or textured surface grips both and stops it. See how to stop a rug slipping.

Protecting the carpet

  • Lift the rug and vacuum the carpet underneath every few weeks.
  • Rotate the rug every few months to even out wear and fading.
  • Dry spills thoroughly so moisture does not sit between rug and carpet.
