The finishing touch: a fringe

On a traditionally woven rug the fringe is the end of the warp threads, knotted to stop the weave unravelling. On many modern rugs the fringe is added for looks, giving a relaxed, hand-crafted feel. Either way, it softens the edge of the rug and suits boho, Berber and Scandi-style rooms.

Fringe care

  • Vacuum from the middle of the rug towards the fringe, lifting the head before the fringe, or switch off the brush roll.
  • Comb tangled tassels with your fingers. Trim a loose thread level; never pull it.
  • In busy hallways a fringe can catch on shoes and vacuums; consider a runner without one.

Questions about fringed & tasselled rugs

Can I cut the fringe off a rug?

We do not recommend it. On woven rugs the fringe can be part of the structure, and cutting it may void your right to return the rug.

How do I stop a fringe tangling in the vacuum?

Turn off the brush roll or use a hand attachment near the edge, and vacuum towards the fringe rather than across it.

Are fringed rugs in fashion?

Fringes are a signature of boho and Berber styles, which remain popular in UK interiors.
