Outdoor rugs: how to choose and care for them

An outdoor rug turns a patio or balcony into a room. Here is how to choose one that copes with the British weather, and how to keep it fresh.

Materials that work outside

Outdoor rugs are made from synthetic fibres such as polypropylene and polyester, which do not absorb water, dry quickly and resist mould better than natural fibres. Most are flatwoven or have a very low pile so dirt sweeps off. Never use a jute, wool or viscose rug outdoors.

Choosing the size

  • Under a dining set: add 60 cm on every side of the table, as indoors.
  • Under a lounge set: let at least the front legs of the seats sit on the rug.
  • On a balcony: leave a margin so water can drain at the edges.

Where to put it

  • Patios and paving: ideal. Sweep the surface first.
  • Decking: fine, but lift the rug regularly so the boards beneath can dry.
  • Grass: only for short periods; grass underneath will yellow and the rug stays damp.
  • Covered areas and garden rooms: the best place for an outdoor rug.

Cleaning and care

  1. Shake or sweep off leaves and soil regularly.
  2. For a deeper clean, hose down, scrub gently with mild soapy water and a soft brush, then rinse.
  3. Dry fully, hung over a rail or laid on a clean, sloping surface, before rolling.
  4. After heavy rain, lift a corner and let air underneath.

Winter storage

Clean and dry the rug, then roll it (never fold) and store it somewhere dry. Bringing it in over winter keeps colours bright and extends its life. Many outdoor rugs work equally well indoors in a kitchen or utility room.

Frequently asked questions

Can you leave an outdoor rug out all year?

It is better to bring it in over winter to prevent mould and fading.

Can an outdoor rug go on grass?

Only temporarily; it will damage the grass and stay damp.
