A 76 x 230 cm rug measures roughly 2 ft 6 in by 7 ft 7 in and covers about 1.7 square metres. Its long, narrow proportions make it a runner. As a guideline, leave about 10 to 15 cm of floor showing on each side, so a 76 cm wide runner suits a hallway or landing roughly 96 to 106 cm wide, and its 230 cm length suits a corridor with at least 270 cm of clear length so the ends are not trapped under doors. It also works alongside a kitchen run or beside a bed.

Which rooms suit this size

Of the 58 designs we stock in 76 x 230 cm, the makers suggest them for: Living room (25) and Hallway (18). Before ordering, mark the rug outline on the floor with masking tape or newspaper and live with it for a day. It is the quickest way to check walkways, door swings and how much floor shows around the edges.

Checks before you buy

  • Measure the room and the furniture, not just the floor space you can see.
  • Check door clearance: deeper piles can catch the bottom of a door.
  • Allow for an underlay on smooth floors; it adds grip and a few millimetres of height.
  • Maker sizes can vary by a few centimetres from the nominal size, especially on handmade rugs, so check the product page.
