Why material matters
| Material | Water | Vacuum |
|---|---|---|
| Wool | Cool water, sparingly | Suction or a gentle brush roll |
| Viscose and wool and viscose | Avoid; blot dry | Suction only |
| Jute and natural fibres | Avoid; dry fast | Suction only |
| Polypropylene and polyester | Fine with mild detergent | Most settings |
| Labelled washable | As the care label says | As normal |
The finder combines these rules with the steps for each job, drawn from our stain removal, wool cleaning and vacuuming guides. The care notes on your product page always come first.
Frequently asked questions
How do I clean a rug at home?
Vacuum regularly, blot spills straight away, and use water only as far as the fibre allows: sparingly on wool, barely at all on viscose and jute, more freely on synthetics.
Can I steam clean a rug?
Not wool and viscose blends, viscose or jute. Some synthetic rugs tolerate it; check the care notes.
How do I get candle wax out of a rug?
Harden it with ice, lift it off, then press brown paper over the residue with a warm iron. Not on viscose.
