Rugs for open-plan living: zoning with rugs
In open-plan spaces, rugs do the job that walls used to. Used well, they turn one big room into distinct, comfortable zones.
One rug per zone
Give each activity its own rug: one under the seating group, one under the dining table, and a runner in the kitchen if you like. Each rug should be sized to its furniture, not to the whole room.

Spacing
- Leave at least 30 to 60 cm of floor between rugs so each zone reads clearly.
- Align rugs with each other and with the main furniture, not at random angles.
- Keep walkways between zones clear of rug edges where possible.
Mixing rugs in one space
Rugs that can be seen together should feel related: share a colour, a material or a scale of pattern. A safe formula is one patterned rug plus one plain or textured rug in a colour taken from the pattern. Jute or plain wool works well as the quieter partner.
