How to store a rug
Whether you are moving house, swapping rugs seasonally or putting one away for a while, storing it properly prevents creases, damp and moth damage.
1. Clean it first
Vacuum both sides thoroughly. Dirt and food traces attract moths and insects. Make sure the rug is completely dry; any dampness in storage leads to mould and odours.
2. Roll it, never fold it
- Roll pile side in for most rugs, which protects the pile.
- Roll along the length, from one short end, keeping the edges straight.
- Rolling around a cardboard tube helps keep a large rug straight.
- Folding causes creases and can crack the backing.
3. Wrap it to breathe
Wrap in breathable material such as cotton sheeting or acid-free paper and tie loosely. Avoid sealing natural-fibre rugs (wool, jute) in plastic for long periods, because trapped moisture causes mildew. Synthetic rugs are more forgiving.
4. Choose the right place
| Good | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Dry, ventilated room or wardrobe | Damp garages, sheds and lofts with big temperature swings |
| Off the floor, lying flat | Standing on end, which bends the roll |
| Nothing heavy on top | Under heavy boxes |
5. Prevent moths (wool rugs)
Clothes moth larvae feed on wool. Clean before storing, add cedar or lavender sachets inside the wrapping, and check the rug every few months. Unroll and air it if you notice any fluff or webbing.
Bringing it back out
Unroll on a clean floor and leave it flat for a day or two. For any curl, see how to get creases out of a rug.
Frequently asked questions
Should I roll or fold a rug for storage?
Always roll, usually pile side in. Folding causes creases and can damage the backing.
Can you store a rug in plastic?
Short term for synthetics is fine. For wool and jute, use breathable wrapping to avoid trapped moisture.
How do I stop moths in a stored wool rug?
Clean it first, wrap it breathably with cedar or lavender, store it somewhere dry and check it regularly.
Can I store a rug in the loft?
Only if the loft is dry and does not get very hot or cold. A spare room or under a bed is usually better.
