What size rug for a corner sofa?
Corner sofas need bigger rugs than most people expect. Here is how to size and position one so the whole seating area feels connected.
The rule
The rug should reach under the front legs of both arms of the L, extend past the open end, and leave room for a coffee table in the middle. In practice that usually means the rug is at least as long as the longer side of the sofa minus 20 to 30 cm, and wide enough to reach under the front of the shorter side.

These are starting points. Sofa depth and arm widths vary, so measure where the front legs sit and use the rug size calculator to check against your room.
Positioning
- Line the rug up with the long side of the sofa, parallel to it.
- Tuck it about 15 to 20 cm under the front legs on both sides.
- Centre the coffee table on the rug, not on the sofa.
If you cannot fit the ideal size
Choose the largest rug that leaves about 20 cm of floor to the walls and get the front legs of the longer side on it. Avoid a small rug floating in the middle of the L, which makes the arrangement look disjointed.
