Choosing polypropylene rugs

Polypropylene (also called olefin) is a hard-wearing synthetic fibre that is solution-dyed, so the colour runs right through the fibre and resists fading and bleaching. It absorbs almost no water, which makes it easy to clean and suitable for kitchens, hallways, homes with pets and, in some designs, outdoor use. It is less springy than wool and can crush under heavy furniture.

Is 60 x 120 cm the right size?

A 60 x 120 cm rug measures roughly 2 ft by 3 ft 11 in and covers about 0.7 square metres. This is a small rug size. It suits beside a bed, in front of a fireplace or sink, inside a front door or as an accent in a reading corner. As a guideline it is too small to anchor a sofa grouping, which normally needs a rug at least as long as the sofa is wide.

Care and cleaning

Vacuum regularly, ideally with a suction-only head or with the beater bar raised for deeper piles, and blot spills straight away from the outside in rather than rubbing. Always follow the care label on the product page, and test any cleaner on a hidden corner first. It is less springy than wool and can crush under heavy furniture.
