Runners are long, narrow rugs for hallways, landings, kitchens and beside beds. As a guideline, choose a runner 10 to 15 cm narrower than the space on each side, and long enough to cover the main walking line without running under doors.

Polyester rugs are soft to the touch and take dye well, so colours stay vivid and the pile can be made very silky or deep and shaggy. Polyester does not absorb water readily, which makes many spills easy to blot, although oily stains cling to it. It is usually lighter and more affordable than wool and does not shed in the same way, but the pile can flatten in heavy traffic over time.

Care and cleaning

Vacuum regularly, ideally with a suction-only head or with the beater bar raised for deeper piles, and blot spills straight away from the outside in rather than rubbing.
