Choosing polyester rugs

Polyester rugs are soft to the touch and take dye well, so colours stay vivid and the pile can be made very silky or deep and shaggy. Polyester does not absorb water readily, which makes many spills easy to blot, although oily stains cling to it. It is usually lighter and more affordable than wool and does not shed in the same way, but the pile can flatten in heavy traffic over time.

Is 61 x 230 cm the right size?

A 61 x 230 cm rug measures roughly 2 ft by 7 ft 7 in and covers about 1.4 square metres. Its long, narrow proportions make it a runner. As a guideline, leave about 10 to 15 cm of floor showing on each side, so a 61 cm wide runner suits a hallway or landing roughly 81 to 91 cm wide, and its 230 cm length suits a corridor with at least 270 cm of clear length so the ends are not trapped under doors. It also works alongside a kitchen run or beside a bed.

Care and cleaning

Vacuum regularly, ideally with a suction-only head or with the beater bar raised for deeper piles, and blot spills straight away from the outside in rather than rubbing. Always follow the care label on the product page, and test any cleaner on a hidden corner first. It is usually lighter and more affordable than wool and does not shed in the same way, but the pile can flatten in heavy traffic over time.
