Choosing polyester rugs

Polyester rugs are soft to the touch and take dye well, so colours stay vivid and the pile can be made very silky or deep and shaggy. Polyester does not absorb water readily, which makes many spills easy to blot, although oily stains cling to it. It is usually lighter and more affordable than wool and does not shed in the same way, but the pile can flatten in heavy traffic over time.

Is 61 x 120 cm the right size?

A 61 x 120 cm rug measures roughly 2 ft by 3 ft 11 in and covers about 0.7 square metres. This is a small rug size. It suits beside a bed, in front of a fireplace or sink, inside a front door or as an accent in a reading corner. As a guideline it is too small to anchor a sofa grouping, which normally needs a rug at least as long as the sofa is wide.

Care and cleaning

Vacuum regularly, ideally with a suction-only head or with the beater bar raised for deeper piles, and blot spills straight away from the outside in rather than rubbing. Always follow the care label on the product page, and test any cleaner on a hidden corner first. It is usually lighter and more affordable than wool and does not shed in the same way, but the pile can flatten in heavy traffic over time.
