Choosing floral and botanical rugs

Floral and botanical rugs feature flowers, leaves and trailing plants, from traditional chintz-style designs to large modern leaf prints. They suit country, cottage and maximalist schemes and can soften a room full of hard lines. Pick a background colour that matches your walls or sofa so the pattern feels connected.

Rugs in the living room

In a living room, a common guideline is to choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs to sit on it, which joins the seating into one group. Leave roughly 30 to 60 cm of floor showing between the rug and the walls. Too small a rug is the most common mistake and makes a room look disjointed.

Care and cleaning

The care instructions given by the makers of these rugs include: "Spot clean only" (1 design). Vacuum regularly, ideally with a suction-only head or with the beater bar raised for deeper piles, and blot spills straight away from the outside in rather than rubbing. Always follow the care label on the product page, and test any cleaner on a hidden corner first. It is usually lighter and more affordable than wool and does not shed in the same way, but the pile can flatten in heavy traffic over time.
