Choosing brown rugs

Brown and tan rugs feel grounded and warm and suit traditional, rustic and mid-century rooms. They are practical for busy homes because they disguise dirt from shoes and paws. Pair a brown rug with cream walls and lighter cushions to stop the room feeling heavy, especially in smaller spaces.

Is 120 x 170 cm the right size?

A 120 x 170 cm rug measures roughly 3 ft 11 in by 5 ft 7 in and covers about 2.0 square metres. In a living room, a common guideline is to leave 30 to 60 cm of floor between the rug and the walls, which suggests a room of roughly 1.8 x 2.3 m to 2.4 x 2.9 m. Its 170 cm length sits comfortably in front of a sofa up to about 140 cm wide (allowing about 15 cm of rug beyond each end). It is generally too small to sit under a dining table with the chairs, which needs about 60 cm of rug beyond the table on every side.

Care and cleaning

The care instructions given by the makers of these rugs include: "Spot clean only" (4 designs); "Machine wash on a delicate cycle and lay flat to dry" (1 design); "Vacuum regularly and blot stains gently with lukewarm water and mild soap" (1 design). Vacuum regularly, ideally with a suction-only head or with the beater bar raised for deeper piles, and blot spills straight away from the outside in rather than rubbing. Always follow the care label on the product page, and test any cleaner on a hidden corner first. It is usually lighter and more affordable than wool and does not shed in the same way, but the pile can flatten in heavy traffic over time.

Frequently asked questions

How many brown rugs in 120 x 170 cm does Rug Kingdom sell?

What are brown rugs in 120 x 170 cm made from?

By material, this selection includes Polyester (16), Polypropylene (10), Polypropylene & polyester (5) and Wool (1). Polyester rugs are soft to the touch and take dye well, so colours stay vivid and the pile can be made very silky or deep and shaggy.
