The short answer

Yes. Polyester can be made very soft and silky, which is why it is common in shaggy and plush bedroom rugs.

How polyester behaves

Polyester rugs are soft to the touch and take dye well, so colours stay vivid and the pile can be made very silky or deep and shaggy. Polyester does not absorb water readily, which makes many spills easy to blot, although oily stains cling to it. It is usually lighter and more affordable than wool and does not shed in the same way, but the pile can flatten in heavy traffic over time.

Verdicts are general, based on how each fibre behaves. Construction, pile height and backing matter as much as fibre, so read the product page for each rug.

Practical tips

Bedrooms see less traffic, so softer, deeper piles and more delicate fibres last well here.
